Day Five -- Olympia

After an amazing breakfast we made it to the parking lot at Ancient Olympia by 8 a.m. It was a bit of a stroll to the ticket kiosk and I expected hordes of people. But we entered alone and moved with purpose to the Olympic stadium. I wanted to experience it without anyone else there. Matt ran the length of the stadium and I declared him the winner.

We walked past the gymnasium, the Temple of Hera, the treasury, the place where they light the Olympic torch and the bases that held statues of cheaters. All along we had a filthy dog companion.

We admired what was left of the Temple of Zeus...

Watched workers weed whack in the wrestling school...

And then headed for Olympia's excellent museum.

We left Olympia at 10:30, headed for Delphi. We crossed the Rio Antirio Bridge for the small sum of 13.30 euros. This bridge cost 630 million euros to build. I guess I could make a contribution.

We drove a short distance further to Nafpaktos to find lunch. There is a large medieval castle on the hill above the town and two medieval towers flank the port. You can just make out the Rio Antirio bridge in the distance.

We had a delicious lunch in a taverna recommended by our guidebook. The portions in Greece are huge and they often bring complimentary dishes to the table. We agreed to share plates from now on. The last leg of our trip to Delphi took us along one of Greece's many coastlines. It was lovely.

At Itea we headed up the steep hill to Delphi. We are staying at Hermes Hotel in which every room boasts a view of the Gulf of Corinth. This was the view from our room.

After taking a nap we headed up the steps outside our hotel to find dinner.  We shared vegetable pie and boiled greens. Brett and Brendon called while we were eating dinner. They are having a fabulous time. After dinner we stopped in a little coffeeshop next to our hotel. We have a great view but the wi-fi is atrocious and we needed to check in on things. The worker in the shop was beyond friendly. He spent a lot of time explaining his views on beer production in Greece. We ducked out at 11 p.m.
