My friend, Linda, and I decided we would head to NYC in January to see Broadway plays to make use of my companion fare on Southwest. Ever since Linda retired she has had the worst luck with travel. The pandemic threw a wrench in her plans...then fires in California....then a bad knee. What could go wrong? Frogs? Boils? Locusts? None of those Moses plagues so far, but the FAA "plagued" us.
Linda picked me up at 4 a.m. to head to the airport. She said, "Did you see that travel advisory?" I looked at my Southwest app but didn't see anything so we questioned the Southwest employee who took our bags. "There is a nationwide shut down of all flights due to a computer glitch with the FAA. But we are allowed to go ahead and load our first flights." I actually giggled...not the plague I was worried about.
Our flight was scheduled to take off at 5:40 a.m. but took off at 7 a.m. I worried about our connecting flight in Denver. We arrived to snow and no way to get to our connecting flight in time. The ticker board with the flights listed had many flights delayed and cancelled.
Luckily our plane was delayed by a half hour. Our plans for lunch were foiled. We ate too much trail mix as we waited for our plane to take off. We felt lucky we had made it. We sat for an hour waiting for three passengers and their luggage. Then there was a large bump as the flight attendants took us through the safety briefing. We were told that the pilot had knocked a "pin" on the front of the plane and we needed to wait for maintenance. We imagined ourselves having to file off the plane. Finally we headed to the de-icing process and took off into the friendly skies for our final flight to NYC. We landed in La Guardia a couple hours late and feeling very lucky to have booked flights that were not cancelled.
We are staying at the Hard Rock Hotel in Times Square. It is a lovely hotel....with no view of Times Square. They make up for it with ambience and rock memorabilia. Elton John greeted us when we got off the elevator on our floor.
The pillows are embroidered with guitars.
Lady Gaga greets us from our bathroom door.
We headed down to the hotel restaurant immediately. We were so hungry. The food was excellent and there was a live music. The man playing and singing was a cross between Bob Marley and Elton John.
We were so glad to be in NYC and ready to savor all it has to offer.
