Shop Till You Drop

We took it slow getting up this morning. I actually slept over eleven hours. I needed it! We ate a late breakfast in our hotel and then got an Uber to a place called Watershed next to the aquarium.  Gayle and I scheduled this day to shop in South Africa. Our luggage requirements have been very limited up until now. We each get another carry on for the trip home. We didn’t want to just buy trinkets. We wanted to take home things that would remind us of the beauty of this land and it’s people.

First we walked through the entire shopping area without purchasing anything. It was hard because we found so many things we loved. But we didn’t want to impulse buy.  Then we sat down in the food market and ate quiche and fresh fruit. We talked about what we had seen and what we thought we would go back and buy. Before heading back in we each purchased large woven straw bags to carry our treasures home on the plane. Then we went back with a plan. I made one purchase that was large enough that I got to write my name on the vendor's wall!  Then we took an Uber back to our hotel with satisfied grins on our faces.

The one thing on our schedules for the day was a dinner reservation for a place called the Potluck Club. I had asked my son Brett to research a must-eat-at restaurant in Cape Town. This was his suggestion. It is a Tapas place located in the Old Biscuit Mill. The award winning chef is a man named Luke Dale Roberts. They only have two seatings a night. You either have to eat at 6 pm or 8:30 pm. We opted for the earlier hour. We are technically senior citizens and we wanted to get home at a decent hour.

The traffic was a nightmare at that time of night. Security met us when we got out of the Uber and directed us to an elevator to the 6th floor. This is a sketchy, industrial part of town. Not the typical place for a high-end restaurant. We were given a menu, a pencil and a piece of paper and told to choose 6-8 dishes to share. We got fish sliders on a Japanese steam bun, truffle and asparagus with quail eggs and hollandaise sauce on a puff pastry,
Sea bass on a brioche bun with a very spicy sauce, pork belly with a peanut curry sauce, and two desserts. The one we loved was a raspberry curd with torched meringue and a raspberry sorbet. It was heavenly. The meal was exquisite. Good call, Brett!!

The restaurant is on the top floor of an old biscuit mill. There are windows everywhere. Even in the bathroom.

The view is mostly of the industrial area surrounding the restaurant. But the mountains in Cape Town make every view worthwhile.

This is the look on my face eating this incredible meal.

At 8:15 it was clear they had people waiting to be seated. We got an Uber and gave the license plate number to our waitress. She radioed it down to security. They let us know when our driver arrived. They want to keep their customers safe in that part of town. We were home by 8:30 feeling well sated.
