A Day of Opulent Beauty

Since we got to bed early last night we were up and out of our room by 9 a.m.  I went into the office to return the remote for the wrong TV.  I thought I might at least have gotten an apology.  Instead the man at the desk grunted and took the remote from me.  It was an unsatisfying response.

We headed up to Ragged Point.  About the furthest we can go before Highway 1 is closed.  We stopped at the Ragged Point Inn and Resort and then we walked over to enjoy the amazing view.

We opted not to hike down to the beach via the insanely crazy stairs.

We enjoyed the view in a less strenuous manner....

...and communed with the beauty.

The property is covered in beautiful flora.

We ate a late and delicious breakfast in a beautiful restaurant as the only customers.  Then we drove back the way we had come, pulling off the side of the road over and over again to enjoy the amazing views.

When we were back in cell phone range I found a voicemail from my mechanic.  My car was ready to be picked up.  He suggested I stop in and pay for it when I get back home.  I love my mechanic!

Just past the Piedras Blancas Light Station we stopped at the Elephant Seal Rookery.  We read that adult male elephant seals can weigh between 3,000-5,000 lbs..  We saw how big that is.

The rest of the elephant seals were piled up and telling each other off.

We stopped at the W.R. Hearst Memorial Beach.  I walked down the pier...

and enjoyed the view of Hearst Castle on the hill.

By then it was time to head over for our Hearst Castle tour.

We were signed up for an ADA tour.  We found ourselves on a handicap accessible van with a couple from Nipomo.  The four of us got a tour all to ourselves.  Our tour guide was Mike Smothers and he was exceptional.

We heard what we would need to do to be able to swim in this pool.

We were awed by the amazing amount of art.

We imagined ourselves sitting down for dinner in this dining room.

We were enchanted by the view down to the ocean.

We ended at the indoor heated pool, complete with gold inlay in the tile.

We got back on our ADA van and headed back down the steep hill.  Then we headed south on Highway 1, back past Cambria in search of a highway that would take us over to the 101.  We had wanted to travel all the way up Highway 1 but a rock slide has closed the road north of Ragged Point.  We needed to backtrack so that we can get to Monterey for the night.

We stopped in Paso Robles for an early dinner.  We hadn't eaten since breakfast in Ragged Point.  I Yelped "salads near me" and we ended up at Odyssey World Cafe.  If you are looking for an excellent salad in Paso, you can't go wrong here.

Back on the road to Monterey we joined the Zoom Webinar of the Standing Committee of the Church of the Brethren discussing how to work at confession regarding the history of harmful treatment of LGBTQ persons in the church.  The conversation was as satisfying as the one I had with clerk back at the motel this morning.

We arrived at our lovely AirBnB after dark.  We are steps from Lover's Point.  We can hear the waves from our place.  I am eager to see more of our surroundings when the sun comes up.
