Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Gayle and I were up and out of Stay USA by 7:30 this morning.  We had things we wanted to see!  We drove up Iron Mountain Road in the Black Hills -- 17 miles, 314 curves, 14 switchbacks, 3 pigtails, 3 tunnels, 2 splits, 4 presidents.  Here are the four presidents from Iron Mountain Road.

Here are the same presidents silhouetted from one of the tunnels.

I love tunnels.

The thing I most love about this road is when it splits and it is just one lane driving through a forest of pine and aspen.

I opened the sunroof and rolled down my window and just let the mountain air and the scenery make me grateful.  We headed towards Devil's Tower in Wyoming next.  I really wanted to see it.  We wondered if we would be able to see it from I-90 but we couldn't.  So we took off towards it.  We ended up going way out of our way but it was definitely worth it.

As we were driving away Gayle said something about it the Devil's Tower in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.  I told her that was a movie I had never seen.  She was dumbfounded.  She thought that was why I wanted to see Devil's Tower.  I told her I wanted to see it because it is a beautiful, natural phenomenon.  Sometime on this trip Gayle is going to make sure I finally see the movie that was filmed at this beautiful, natural phenomenon.

Devil's Tower is not surrounded by gas stations or restaurants.  We drove a long way before we found a restaurant/bowling alley/casino.   We ordered our food to go.  We still had miles to go before we would arrive in Bozeman, MT.

I told someone before I left on this trip that my sister and I take different kinds of photos.  She takes photos of buildings, bridges, cranes, etc.  She is a licensed contractor.  I take photos of churches and church signs.  I was a pastor.  Here is my favorite one of the day.

We arrived in our charming AirBnB just after 7 p.m. We were both exhausted and hoping that now that we are in Montana our long days of driving will be over.  Our accommodations for the evening are beautiful...but appear to be right next to a very busy train track.

We drove into downtown Bozeman for dim sum.  Bozeman is a lovely town and it appears that the average age of their residents is 25.  Gayle had never had dim sum before and will probably never have it again.  Our dinner conversation was about close encounters of the first, second, third, fourth and fifth kind.  As we drove home we found that we both love to take photos of sunsets and there was a gorgeous one tonight.

We went to bed, after comparing the ingredients of our sleep aids.
